A stye is a very tender swollen lump near the edge of your eyelid. Stye looks like a boil or pimple.Although most styes form on the outside of the eyelid, some do develop on the inside.
stye causes
A stye is caused by staphylococcal bacteria. Bacteria can cause inflammation or infection of the eyelash follicle, oil glands that drain through ducts into the eyelashes. When the duct is clogged, oil can’t drain and backs up into the glands. The gland becomes swollen and inflamed, causing the stye.
stye symptoms
A lump on the eyelid and swelling of the eyelid are two visible signs of an eye stye.
Symptoms of an eye stye include:
- Redness
- Burning sensation
- Pain
- The lump feels hot when touch
- Swollen eyelids
- Tenderness
- Droopy eyelids
- Eye discharge
stye treatment
A stye usually will disappear on its own in a few days. However, to reduce the pain and swelling, a stye can be treated at home.
- Apply a warm washcloth to the eyelid. Apply for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, 3 to 5 times a day. Rewarm washcloth as needed by soaking it in warm water.
- Gently wipe away eyelid drainage with mild soap and water, or eyelid wipes
- Pain relievers may be helpful if the stye is particularly sore.
- A doctor may prescribe topical antibiotic or oral antibiotics depending on the severity of the stye and drain the pus if necessary to relieve the pressure and pain
It is best not to apply eye makeup, lotions, or wear contact lenses until the stye has completely gone.Do not pop the stye no matter how unbearable it is.it will go away on it own.
